Digital
Paging
The QV digital paging and simulcast project continues to
progress. We currently have all of the tower sites in our area capable of
operating in the simulcast mode and are continuing range testing. This
simulcast of tone and voice occurs on 152.0075 only, not low band. This
same frequency is used during our alpha-numeric paging as well. We have
distributed more alpha-numeric pagers out to chiefs of various
departments. This will allow us to get a better idea of the coverage in
some of our outlying areas. We are trying to send calls over the alpha
system as well if the dispatchers have time. We have written a computer
program that assigns pagers their distinct or group “cap-codes”. There
are 4 cap codes per pager. Our next step is to find a computer program
that can allow dispatchers to easily point and click to send out pages. We
are working with TN and KX on this part of the project.
www.qvec.org
In what has been a long overdue revision, the new and improved QVEC Web
Page is now up and running. We invite every department to stop by and
browse. This is an excellent site to check apparatus listings, mailing
information and department contacts. There are special sections earmarked
for each company that we dispatch. Chiefs may submit information that they
would like posted as well as a limited amount of photographs. Other
features include sections to post apparatus for sale, list meeting dates,
apparatus descriptions and a patch gallery. We appreciate your feedback
and getting the word out about our new site!
Just the fax
QV continues to provide call
information that we fax to each station and the hospitals. It replaced the age
old “calling for times”. This allows departments to complete their reports
at their leisure. Ambulances need to get their information right away so that
they can return to service. Sometimes fax machines at hospitals are not working
so please call us then. We ask departments to check back at a later time if
their fax doesn’t arrive right away instead of calling in.
Emergency
Medical Dispatch
Recently, the State of Connecticut passed legislation under Public Act
01-151 stating that no later than July 1, 2004, each public safety answering
point shall provide emergency medical dispatch. This means that all dispatchers
at QV will have to take an approved EMD class (usually two days) to become
certified in this field. EMD is pre-arrival first aid or other medical
instructions given by trained personnel who are responsible for receiving 911
calls and directly dispatching emergency response services.
In order to deliver effective EMD services to our area residents, QV has begun
to prepare by adding an additional dispatcher during the busier shifts. For many
years, QV has been able to keep costs down, primarily by staffing most shifts
with one dispatcher. We realize, however, that call volumes and activity is
increasing and we are keeping up with changing times.
Still
need pager totals & email from the following depts.:93, 81, 61, 71,
92, 85, 55, 95, 53, 60, 76, 561, 594
New
Dispatchers in training
You may have been hearing two new voices in the past few weeks. That’s because
we have two new part time dispatchers in training. Jeff Bellavance and Keith
Cooper can be heard during the evenings and on weekends. Jeff is a member of the
Moosup Fire Dept., and Keith is an officer with the Williamsville Fire Dept. We
are glad to have them on board.
The
Semi-Annual Meeting of Q.V.E.C., Inc. will be held on Monday April 23rd, 7:30pm
at the Atwood Hose Fire Station of Rt. 205 in Wauregan. If you have any
questions regarding the operations of QV dispatch, please try to attend this
meeting. The Board of Directors and dispatchers will be on hand to answer
questions.
