Volume 3, Issue 2
OCTOBER 1999
NEW CONSOLE
After several exhausting months of research, QVEC has awarded a bid for a new
dispatch console to Tactical Communications of Guilford, CT. Work will begin
shortly to prepare our new room on the second floor of the barracks for the
installation of this new system. We will be installing a CRT/computer based
system on the Windows NT platform manufactured by Orbacom.
Combine this with the new 911 system and our current Computer Aided Dispatch
system, QV will have a truly “state of the art” dispatch console. The new
system will have capabilities for expansion that should serve us well into the
next millennium.
We are continuing to work on our high-band paging synchronization project
with the eventual move toward alpha-numeric paging. The system is also run via
computer so all of our system will be, in one way or another, linked together.
MINITOR III PAGERS - THE SCOOP
There have been many questions about the new Minitor III pagers. To answer
one of them, YES they do make them in our VHF frequency now (152.0075). FYI,
Minitor II’s are getting harder to come by in high band
A TOWER COMES TO NORMAN HILL
The Griswold Tower has finally been constructed and QVEC is
currently working to install transmitter equipment at the site to better serve
our southern areas. With no building available at the site to house our
equipment, QV has purchased a portable communications shelter and it has been
delivered to the site. The radios are inside the building and it has been
powered up. All we have left to do is mount the antennas (at the top) and we
should soon be on the air with low-band paging (33.80), high-band paging
(152.0075) and 33.88 tx/rx. This will also be our first experiment with a fixed
repeater too. We look forward to testing this site soon!!!
OTHER POINTS OF INTEREST
AROUND QV...
The students at Ellis Tech School have begun construction work on our new
transmitter building at the Main Tower in Killingly. They will be doing all the
masonry, carpentry and electrical work which will benefit everyone involved.
With all the talk about computers and the new millennium, if you don't have a
run card, IT IS TIME TO DO ONE. When dispatching with computers, operations will
flow more smoothly and efficiently if most of the information on who to send and
when is already loaded into the system. If you need help to make one, please
contact us and we will be willing to help.
The popularity of UHF has risen tremendously in the past few months. We now
have about 18 depts. that are using the system. This also increases the amount
of traffic on 460.600. Remember to “squelch” your radio first before
speaking to make sure the channel is clear. Attawaugan & East Killingly
operate many of their calls entirely on UHF so if they have a ‘23’ or ‘50’
on the air, they have the priority use of that channel!
